As part of the studio course Architecture and Film the students were given a task where the relationship between space and uncomfortable emotions such as horror. The students were asked to build a scale model of a movie set, on an A3 size base plate with no other measurement regulations. My model is built from foamboard covered in colored paper. The blurry windows are achieved with textured plastic folders as is the lights in the ceiling. The source of light is simply a phone light.
I am especially content with how I achieved a linoleum-like texture to the floor by cutting and gluing each piece of floor slab separately and painting it with varnish.
The inspiration from the set came from old or abandoned buildings from the former sovjet union and ran-down communal buildings in Finland, which always have stirred up uncomfortable emotions in me. There are also some referenses to American hospitals whose cheerful colours in this setting become stressful. As the whole set is constructed around the feeling of being chased (in an either abstract or literal way) the dual doors in the end creates an element of decision and possible consequence. Lastly, as an hommage to classic cinematography, the camera is slightly tilted to make the viewer feel dizzy and out of balance.
