Public Bath for Central Helsinki

One of the most appreciated institutions in the centre of Helsinki, is the movable structure of Allas Pool (formerly Allas Sea Pool). The building is not set to permanently be relocated at the south harbour of Katajanokka, and therefor the assignment of the studio course Building design was to be revolving around a possible permanent public bath at the same location. I decided to attempt to incorporate the vibrant architectural layers and the importance of the surrounding government buildings in my proposal. The site is surrounded by both former and active industrial headquarters, the presidential castle, humble harbour magazines and a ferry terminal. The shape of my building hints at both the commander bridges of the passenger vessels in the neighbouring harbour as well as the institutionally of the Store Enso headquarters and the Presidential castle. The result became quite provocative. Functionally, the space divides the outdoor pier area into three departments: the restaurant area with evening sun, the swimming area with daytime sun and the café area with morning sun. The interior works the same with the restaurant and café being to the left and right of the visitor entering the building and the dressing rooms being placed parallel in front of the entrance. The identical path of the dressing rooms and showers enables visitors of different genders to have exactly the same route to the swimming area and meet at the same point outside.

I ran short on time for this course due to a trip to the United States west coast and would have wished for a more precise and worked out result but I am content with the architectural language and learned some new ways of creating artistic visuals which I have since incorporated in many proposals.
