Art Museum Proposal for Fiskars Village

Nya Bruket

April 2025

Master's level coursework, collaboration between Aalto University and Fiskars Group

Public architecture, museum

Fiskars, Finland

Nya Bruket is my proposal for an art museum in the historically important mill village of Fiskars, one of Finland's most beloved rural attractions. My proposal is an attempt at binding together the historical milieu with the future potential of a village that has profiled itself as a hub of artists, designers and other creatives. The building is significantly larger than the surrounding buildings and therefore, one of my main challenges was to create a building mass that does not feel too massive. To create a sense of openness the room programme of the building is divided into four main functions (lobby, workshops, small and large exhibition) that are interconnected, for a smooth flow of people. Each function feels like its own environment. The main structure consists of a solid brick structure with open window sections supported by timber pillars, laid on a concrete foundation.

This project allowed me to practice my presentation skills and I learned several new techniques during the process. I enjoyed working with the logistics of an art museum as well as the adaptability and resilience that is important for this type of public architecture. What made the assignment special was the cultural importance of the Fiskars village and the balance between honouring it and providing a new direction for its heritage.
